Vibe coding informal, verb: building software by describing intent to an AI and iterating on what it generates, rather than typing every line yourself. The word ‘vibe' is doing the work here: you're steering by feel, not by spec.
Vibe coding: meaning + correct usage
The phrase is used loosely. Here's the tight definition, the etymology, and the misuses that give it a bad name.
The tight definition
Vibe coding = describe → generate → run → observe → refine, in a builder that runs the code for you. If you're just copy-pasting from ChatGPT into an IDE, that's ‘AI-assisted coding' closely related, but not quite vibe coding, because the loop isn't in one surface.
Etymology
Coined by Andrej Karpathy on X in Feb 2025 (‘I just vibe with Composer and it does the thing'). Picked up by the Lovable, Bolt, and Cursor communities immediately. Entered Wikipedia by March 2025.
Common misuses
-
Using ‘vibe coding' to mean ‘I don't need to think.' Wrong. Good vibe coding requires sharper scope than traditional coding, because a vague prompt produces vague code.
-
Using it to justify skipping code review. Wrong. The AI produces real code with real bugs. Read the diffs.
-
Treating it as a synonym for no-code. Wrong (see what is vibe coding).
