    What is vibe coding?

The one-paragraph answer, plus the nuances that actually matter if you're deciding whether to try it.

Vibe coding (verb, coined by Andrej Karpathy in Feb 2025) is the practice of building software by describing what you want in natural language to an AI model, running what it produces, and iterating instead of typing every line by hand.

As of mid-2026 the term gets ~49,500 US searches a month for the definition alone (Semrush), which tells you two things: the mainstream is arriving, and most of them don't yet know what it means.

    The one-paragraph answer

You describe the outcome you want ‘a booking page for a barbershop with WhatsApp confirmations' in an AI-native builder (Lovable, Bolt, v0, Cursor). The AI writes the code, deploys a preview, and you steer with follow-up prompts (‘make the primary button orange', ‘add SMS reminders 24h before'). You still own the codebase, but you spend most of your time editing intent, not syntax.

    Where the term came from

Andrej Karpathy tweeted about ‘vibe coding' in February 2025 to describe letting the AI run while he ‘just chatted with Composer.' The phrase captured something people were already doing and didn't have a word for and it stuck.

Vibe coding vs no-code vs traditional coding

No-code hides the code you compose blocks in a visual builder. Ceiling: whatever the platform pre-built.

Traditional coding you write every line. Ceiling: your time and skill.

Vibe coding the AI writes real code, you can open the file, and the ceiling is your ability to describe what you want. The escape hatch (edit the code yourself) is what makes it serious.

Try vibe coding in 15 minutes

    1. 1
      Pick a builder

Lovable or Bolt for a full app; v0 for a UI screen.

    2. 2
      Write one prompt

‘Build a landing page for a dog-walking service in Austin. Hero, pricing, contact form.'

    3. 3
      Read what came back

Skim the files. You don't need to understand every line just notice the shape.

    4. 4
      Iterate twice

‘Change the hero copy to X.' ‘Add a Stripe Payment Link button.' See how each turn changes the app.

    FAQ

Is vibe coding a real job?

It's a real skill inside product/engineering/design jobs. As of 2026 nobody's hiring for the literal title ‘vibe coder', but roles that expect you to ship AI-built prototypes are exploding.

    Do vibe-coded apps scale?

The code is real React/Node/etc., so yes as far as the underlying stack scales. Most people don't need to worry about scale until they have paying users.

Can I vibe-code without knowing any code?

You can start a project, yes. Shipping one usually requires learning to read errors within the first week.

    Is vibe coding safe?

As safe as the code that gets generated. Always turn on Row Level Security on any user table, never put API keys in the client bundle, and run a security scan before publish.
