Why your pages aren't indexed by Google (2026 diagnostic)

    Technical SEO
    Key takeaway
Nine times out of ten, non-indexed pages are not a technical block. They are pages Google crawled, evaluated, and decided were not worth storing.

If Search Console shows thousands of URLs submitted and dozens indexed, work this diagnostic in order. Stop at the first one that applies to you.

    Cause 1 — Discovery

'Discovered – currently not indexed' means Google knows the URL but has not spent crawl budget on it. Almost always this is an internal-linking problem: the page is in the sitemap and nowhere else. Every URL you care about needs a link from a page that is already indexed.

    Cause 2 — Empty HTML

Client-rendered pages go into a rendering queue that can add weeks. Serve prerendered HTML and the delay disappears.

    Cause 3 — Template sameness

'Crawled – currently not indexed' across a programmatic set means the pages look like each other. If swapping the city name is the only difference, Google keeps one and drops the rest. Each page needs unique substance — real data, real examples, real answers.

    Cause 4 — Fake freshness

Sitemaps that stamp today's date on every URL at every build teach Google to ignore your lastmod entirely. Emit lastmod only when the content actually changed, or omit it.

Cause 5 — Budget spent on the wrong URLs

Advertising 40,000 low-value URLs while your twenty money pages sit at the bottom of the index is how a site starves itself. Order your sitemap index by commercial priority, keep priorities honest, and let the long tail be discovered rather than pushed.

    The one-hour diagnostic

    • Pick five non-indexed URLs and curl them — is there an H1 in the raw HTML?
    • Search Console URL Inspection on each — what is the exact status string?
    • Count internal links pointing at each from indexed pages. Zero is your answer.
    • Diff two programmatic pages — how many words actually differ?
    • Check the sitemap for lastmod values that all share one timestamp.
    • Ping IndexNow so Bing and the AI engines it feeds pick the pages up while Google catches up.

    Frequently asked questions

What does 'Crawled – currently not indexed' mean?

Google fetched the page but judged it not worth storing — usually thin content, near-duplicate templates, or a page with no internal links pointing to it from indexed pages.

How do I get Google to index pages faster?

Submit a clean sitemap without fake lastmod dates, link new pages from already-indexed hub pages, serve real HTML, and ping IndexNow for Bing while Google catches up.

    Does IndexNow work for Google?

Google does not consume IndexNow. It powers Bing, Yandex, Seznam and Naver — which also feed several AI answer engines, so it is still worth submitting.
