Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): the practical 2026 checklist
GEO is not a new SEO. It is the same fundamentals plus answer-shaped content, entity clarity and machine-readable proof. Here is the working checklist.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): the practical 2026 checklist
Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of making a site easy for answer engines to read, trust and quote. Roughly 80% overlaps with classic technical SEO. The remaining 20% is where most sites lose.
Layer 1 — Access
- AI crawlers explicitly allowed in robots.txt.
- No login wall, interstitial or geo-gate on indexable content.
- Fast TTFB — crawlers on a budget abandon slow origins.
- A sitemap index without invented lastmod values.
Layer 2 — Extraction
- One primary question per URL, stated in the H1.
- A 40–60 word direct answer immediately under the H1.
- H2s phrased as questions people actually type.
- Lists and tables in semantic HTML — never as screenshots.
- A visible TL;DR block near the top.
Layer 3 — Trust
- Named author with credentials and an off-site profile.
- Published and updated dates that are real.
- Sourced statistics with outbound links to the primary source.
- First-hand evidence: screenshots, logs, numbers from your own work.
Layer 4 — Entity clarity
- Organization schema with sameAs pointing at every owned profile.
- Identical brand name and description everywhere off-site.
- Internal links using descriptive entity anchors, not 'click here'.
- A glossary that defines your category terms in one sentence each.
Layer 5 — Distribution
Answer engines sample from communities as well as from the open web. Being named in a Reddit thread, a YouTube description, a comparison listicle or a directory increases how often a model associates your brand with the topic. Treat mentions, not just links, as the unit of GEO off-page work.
How to measure it
Track three things monthly: branded prompts (does the model describe you correctly), unbranded prompts (are you named at all), and referral traffic with AI-engine referrers. Rankings alone will not tell you whether GEO is working.
Frequently asked questions
What is Generative Engine Optimization?
GEO is the practice of structuring a site so generative answer engines can extract, trust and cite it — through crawlable HTML, direct answers, entity consistency and structured data.
Is GEO different from SEO?
GEO shares 80% of technical SEO. The difference is optimising for extraction and citation rather than for a blue link click: short factual answers, sourced statistics, and clear entity relationships.
Do backlinks matter for AI search?
Yes, indirectly. Answer engines lean on the same authority signals search engines use, and being mentioned by name on trusted sites increases the chance a model associates your brand with a topic.
