How to get cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews

    AI search
    Key takeaway
Answer engines cite pages they can fetch as plain HTML, that answer one question in the first 60 words, and that show who wrote it and when. Everything else is a multiplier on those three.

In August 2026 we tracked every citation our own pages earned across ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews. The cited pages had almost nothing in common editorially — one was a 400-word definition, one was a 3,000-word teardown. What they shared was structural.

    1. The crawler has to be allowed in

Most sites that complain about invisibility in AI search are blocking the crawlers that would quote them. Check robots.txt for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Claude-User, Google-Extended and Bingbot. Blocking Google-Extended does not remove you from AI Overviews, but blocking GPTBot does remove you from ChatGPT's index.

    2. The answer has to be in the HTML, not in the bundle

GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot fetch HTML. They do not run your React app. If your page ships an empty root div and hydrates client side, an AI crawler sees a blank document and moves on. Prerender or server-render every page you want quoted.

    3. Put the answer first

Models extract the shortest span that answers the query. If your definition arrives in paragraph nine after a personal anecdote, a competitor with the answer in the first sentence gets the citation. Lead with a 40–60 word direct answer, then expand.

    4. Give it something quotable

    • A number with a source and a date — models prefer sourced statistics over adjectives.
    • A named list — 'the five causes of X' maps cleanly into a generated answer.
    • A comparison table in real HTML, not an image.
    • A short definition sentence that starts 'X is …'.

    5. Prove a human stands behind it

Named author with a bio and an external profile, a visible last-updated date, and Article plus Person schema. Answer engines weight provenance heavily because their liability for a wrong citation is higher than a search engine's.

    6. Be consistent about who you are

Use the same brand name, description and sameAs links on your Organization schema, your about page, and every external profile. Entity confusion is the quiet reason a brand never gets named in answers.

    The checklist

    • AI crawlers allowed in robots.txt and verified in server logs.
    • Server-rendered or prerendered HTML for every indexable route.
    • One question per page, answered in the first 60 words.
    • Article + FAQPage + Organization + BreadcrumbList JSON-LD.
    • Named author, bio, external profile, visible updated date.
    • At least one sourced statistic per page.
    • Internal links from an indexed hub page so the URL gets discovered.
    • llms.txt for agents that fetch it — a bonus, not a substitute.

Run that list against your ten highest-intent pages before you write anything new. Citation is a distribution problem long before it is a content problem.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I get my website cited by ChatGPT?

Allow GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, serve server-rendered HTML, answer one specific question per page in the first 60 words, add Article and FAQPage schema, and keep a visible last-updated date with a named author.

    Does Perplexity use Google's index?

Perplexity runs its own crawler (PerplexityBot) plus third-party search APIs. It favours pages with clear headings, direct answers near the top, and citable statistics with sources.

How long does it take to appear in AI Overviews?

Typically 2–8 weeks after a page is indexed by Google, because AI Overviews are grounded in Google's index. Getting indexed fast is the bottleneck, not the AI layer.
