    What is a vibe coder?

The word is new. The role isn't it's the founder-engineer, rebuilt around AI. Here's who they actually are, what they earn, and the six skills that separate finishers from tab-hoarders.

A vibe coder is a person who builds working software by describing what they want to an AI, running it, and iterating instead of authoring every line by hand. Most are entrepreneurs, indie hackers, designers, or PMs who finally have a way to ship without a co-founder.

The role isn't ‘prompt engineer' and it isn't ‘no-code builder'. It's closer to a founder-engineer: someone who owns product taste, ships the code, and talks to users with AI collapsing the grunt work in the middle.

Vibe coder vs traditional dev vs no-code. Vibe coders overlap traditional devs on ownership and no-coders on speed and beat both on ship rate for small products.

Who counts as a vibe coder (and who doesn't)

You're a vibe coder if you (a) ship real software, (b) direct an AI to do most of the writing, and (c) can read what it produced well enough to steer. You're not a vibe coder if you're only using ChatGPT to copy snippets into a tutorial you don't understand that's learning, which is great, but it's not the practice.

Most vibe coders came from one of four backgrounds: founders who used to hire freelancers, designers who used to hand specs to devs, PMs who used to write PRDs and wait, and career-switchers who tried bootcamps and bounced off. What they share isn't a resume it's the willingness to ship an ugly v1 and talk to users.

The 6 skills that actually matter

Forget the syntax debates. In real cohorts, the skills that separate finishers from abandoners are:

    1. Scope discipline. Writing the WON'T list is the whole game.
    2. Prompt anatomy. Role → goal → constraints → evidence. See our prompting section.
    3. Reading diffs. You don't need to write React, but you need to skim a diff and spot ‘that's not what I asked for'.
    4. Backend hygiene. RLS on every table, no secrets in the client. Non-negotiable.
    5. Distribution instinct. One SEO page + one warm channel + one launch surface. Enough.
    6. User conversation. Five real strangers > any dashboard.

    What vibe coders actually earn

There is no ‘vibe coder salary' most are founders. From our cohort: the median finisher hits $1.2k MRR by month 4, the top decile clears $15k MRR by month 6, and the bottom third never leaves free. The gap isn't talent it's whether they wrote a kill list on Day 3 and whether they talked to five strangers on Day 30. Every high earner in the sample did both.

    FAQ

Is ‘vibe coder' a real job title?

Not on LinkedIn yet but the role (founder-engineer shipping via AI) is real and pays. Titles follow practice, not the other way around.

Do vibe coders replace real developers?

No. They replace the small-product pipeline that used to require hiring a junior dev or a freelancer. Serious engineering teams are hiring vibe-fluent devs, not firing existing ones.

Can you make money as a vibe coder without knowing code?

Yes, if you learn to read code. Writing is optional; reading a stack trace is not.

Is being a vibe coder the same as being an indie hacker?

Big overlap. Every vibe coder is basically an indie hacker with better use. Not every indie hacker vibe codes some still hand-write everything.
